Calcium Sludge in the Bladder

What is calcium slush?

It is an accumulation of calcium in the bladder. This condition is very painful as it can be compared to urinating out sand. It is most commonly found in guinea pigs and rabbits .

What is the causes ?

Diets that are too high in calcium, this includes too much spinach and kale, lucerne hay, pellets containing lucerne(Alfalfa). 

What are the symptoms? 

  • Pain when urinating 
  • White sandy debris in urine. 
  • Not using its litterbox . 
  • Teeth grinding when urinating 

How can owners prevent this?

  •  Ensure your pet is fed pellets that do not have lucerne as the main ingredient.
  • Do not feed lucerne(alfalfa) to rabbits and guinea pig older that 1 year 
  •  Limit kale and spinach to only a few times a week.
