About us
{alt}

We are a passionate team dedicated to providing loving care and safe shelter for exotic pets. Our rescue was born out of a clear need recognised by Dr Karli du Preez to create a sanctuary specifically for Cape Town's exotic animals that often have nowhere else to turn. With traditional shelters and rescues already overwhelmed, it was vital to establish a place focused solely on these unique companions.

Our organisation is fueled by kindness, respect and a shared vision to improve the lives of these often-overlooked animals. We believe every creature deserves compassionate, quality care and thoughtful decision-making that always puts their welfare first.

One of the greatest strengths of our rescue is our close connection to the Exotic Vet practice. With two dedicated exotic savvy veterinarians on our team, including Dr Karli herself and Dr Kenan Ganesan, we are uniquely equipped to provide excellent medical care tailored to the needs of these special species. Our rescue is based within this veterinary practice, allowing seamless, immediate access to professional treatment and medical oversight.

Transparency, accountability and teamwork form the cornerstone of everything we do. Every member of our team plays a vital role, collaborating closely to create a nurturing environment where animals can heal, grow and thrive.

Our Facilitators

Our facilitators are experienced in the care of different species, combining professional veterinary and animal rehabilitation skills with deep empathy:

Veterinarians Dr Karli and Dr Kenan oversee medical care for all species and make critical decisions about treatment.

Facilitators Sr Corina Wepener (rabbits), Sr Janke Nortje (birds), Jaime Fraser (guinea pigs), Keira Slabbert (hamsters), Brenda Snyman (rats) and Sr Jessica Smit (all species) dedicate their time to treatment, bonding, rehoming and public outreach for their relevant animals.

Support include administration (Isabella Colatruglio & Sr Jessica Smit), wildlife facilitation (Keira Slabbert), fundraising (Camilla Crewe & Brenda Snyman) and social media is managed by the whole team.

Our Volunteer Spirit and Commitment

Every person involved with Exotic Vet Rescues donates their time, energy and skills without financial compensation. We are motivated solely by our love for animals and dedication to their welfare. All funds raised are used exclusively for the care, treatment and rehoming of rescued exotic pets.

Our team is bound by clear roles and responsibilities but united by shared compassion and a commitment to high ethical standards in every aspect of our work. From veterinary decisions to record keeping, from fundraising to adoption protocols. We value transparency, teamwork and open communication, which strengthens our rescue family and the trust placed in us by the public.

Fostering, Adoption and Guardianship
{alt}

We carefully manage every step of the adoption process to ensure the long-term wellbeing of our animals and adopters, including thorough health checks, sterilisation, vaccinations and clear guardianship agreements. Our foster system, coordinated by dedicated facilitators, is used exclusively for rats and guinea pigs, providing them with temporary loving homes until they find their forever families.

All other exotic rescues remain at the vet practice, where they receive experienced medical care and rehabilitation. Additionally, a select number of rats and guinea pigs also stay at the practice, either while still undergoing or recovering from medical treatment or when ready to be adopted. This way clients and visitors can meet and interact with them, enhancing their chances of finding loving homes.
