Bladder Stones

What is Bladder stones?

It is a build up of calcium in the bladder in a form of a stone. This condition is very painful. It is most commonly found in guinea pigs and rabbits .

What causes bladder stones in rabbits and guinea pigs?

Diets that are too high in calcium, this includes too much spinach and kale, lucerne hay, pellets containing lucerne(Alfalfa). 

What is the symptoms of bladder stones? 

  • Blood in urine
  • Pain when urinating 
  • White sandy debris in urine. 
  • Not using its litterbox . 
  • Teeth grinding when urinating

How can owners prevent this?

  •  Ensure your pet is fed pellets that do not have lucerne as the main ingredient.
  • Do not feed lucerne(alfalfa) to rabbits and guinea pig older that 1 year 
  •  Limit kale and spinach to only a few times a week.
